Cross-Platform App: One Codebase for iOS and Android

Your customers use both iPhone and Android, and you have neither the budget nor the time for two separate apps: a familiar situation for many companies. In such cases a cross-platform app is usually suggested: the code is written once and works on both platforms. Let us look at how cross-platform development works, which technologies are used, where it makes sense, and when it is still worth choosing the native path.

What a cross-platform app is

In the classic, native approach, an iOS app is written in Swift and an Android app in Kotlin. That gives you two codebases, often two teams, and every change has to be made twice.

A cross-platform app is built on shared code. The developer describes the screens, the logic and the data exchange with the server once, and the tools build separate iOS and Android apps from it. To the user it is an ordinary app: it is downloaded from the App Store or Google Play and works like any other.

Do not confuse this approach with "a website wrapped in an app". A wrapper around a web page is a different story: such solutions often run slowly and can have trouble passing store review.

Main technologies

  • Flutter is Google's framework, uses the Dart language, and draws the interface with its own graphics engine, so the app looks the same on both platforms.
  • React Native is Meta's framework, uses JavaScript or TypeScript, and relies on the platform's native components. It is convenient for teams with web development experience.
  • Kotlin Multiplatform primarily shares the business logic, while the interface can be either shared or separate for each platform.

The team chooses the technology, not the client. What matters more to you is that the team has real projects on the chosen tool.

Advantages of cross-platform development

  • One codebase. A feature is written once and works on both platforms.
  • Simultaneous release. New capabilities reach iPhone owners and Android users at the same time.
  • Fixes in one place. Most bugs live in the shared code and are fixed once.
  • Easier support. Updates and improvements are handled by one team.
  • Unified design. The brand style looks the same on both platforms.
  • Fast MVP. You can test the idea on the whole audience right away.

Limitations and risks

Cross-platform is not a magic wand. It is worth knowing its limitations in advance:

  • Platform-specific features. Some capabilities still need native code, for example working with special equipment or the newest system features.
  • Lag with new releases. When iOS or Android gets a new capability, support for it in cross-platform tools may arrive a little later.
  • App size. The installation file can be larger than that of a native equivalent.
  • Heavy graphics. For complex games, augmented reality or video processing, the native approach is preferable.
  • Dependence on libraries. Poor-quality or abandoned third-party packages cause problems. An experienced team chooses them carefully.

Native vs. cross-platform development: comparison

Criterion Native app Cross-platform app
Codebase Separate for each platform One shared
Team Often two tracks One team
Feature releases Gap between platforms possible Simultaneous
Device capabilities Fully and immediately Most are ready, the rest via native modules
Complex graphics Best choice Limited
Support Double the work Mostly once
For business apps Often excessive Usually sufficient

Which tasks cross-platform suits

Most business apps are screens, lists, forms and data exchange with a server. This is exactly where a cross-platform app pays off best:

  • an online store and catalog;
  • delivery: apps for customers and couriers;
  • a learning center app: schedule, payment, grades and announcements;
  • online booking for a clinic or salon;
  • a loyalty program and bonus card;
  • a working app for sales agents and staff.

In addition, tools like Flutter let you build a desktop app for Windows and macOS from the same codebase, which can be handy for a checkout or warehouse program.

When to choose native development

  • The main value of the app is graphics: a game, 3D, augmented reality.
  • You need deep work with the device: complex background processes, special equipment.
  • You need only one platform, and for the long term.
  • You already have a native app and your own team.

Three common myths

"A cross-platform app is slow." In a well-written business app on modern tools, an ordinary user will not notice the difference. Slowness is more often about code quality than about the technology.

"It's just a website." No, it is a full-fledged app from the store, with camera, geolocation, push notifications and other capabilities.

"We'll have to move to native anyway." Many business apps work successfully on cross-platform technologies for years. And if the back end is shared, the mobile part can be replaced if necessary.

What to ask a contractor

  1. What apps have you built with this technology? Can I download them from the store?
  2. How do you handle tasks that need platform-specific features?
  3. Do you build the back end and the admin panel?
  4. Who will support and update the app?

The UFLEX team recommends the native or cross-platform path based on the business task and develops the app together with the back end. More details are on the mobile app development page.

FAQ

Will the user notice that the app is cross-platform?

As a rule, no. A well-written cross-platform app runs fast and does not differ from other apps on the phone.

Do the camera, maps and push notifications work?

Yes, ready-made solutions exist for them. Rare, specific features are added through native modules.

Is cross-platform development cheaper?

If you need both platforms, the amount of work is usually smaller. The exact price depends on the features and the complexity of the back end.
