What Is a Landing Page and When Does Your Business Need One?

The ads are running, people click the link, but there are almost no leads. Often the reason is that the customer lands on the wrong page: on a multi-page site they get lost, and on an Instagram profile they can't find what they need. Let's look at what a landing page is, when building one is truly justified, and which blocks help turn visitors into leads.

What is a landing page

A landing page is a standalone web page built around one offer and one target action: leave a request, call, sign up for a course or message you on Telegram.

An ordinary website has many sections, menus and links. A landing page has nothing extra: from top to bottom the page tells one story - the problem, the solution, why you, how it works and how to order.

Landing page vs. corporate website: what's the difference

Criterion Landing page Corporate website
Goal One action: a lead, a call Full information about the company
Structure One long page Many pages and sections
Traffic source Mostly ads and links Search, ads, recommendations
Offer One product or service All products and services
Preparation Usually launches faster Takes more time and content
SEO potential Limited Broad

These formats don't compete. Many companies have a main website and separate landing pages for ad campaigns.

When you need a landing page

Building a landing page makes sense in these situations:

  • An ad campaign. Instagram targeting, placements in Telegram channels, contextual ads in Google and Yandex - traffic should go to one specific offer.
  • A new product or service. You can test the direction without rebuilding your main site.
  • Enrollment for courses and events. A convenient format for training centers, workshops, seminars and exhibitions.
  • A business with a single service. Air conditioner installation, apartment renovation, freight transport - a multi-page site is often overkill here.
  • Promotions and seasonal offers. A time-limited discount or a holiday set.
  • Testing a hypothesis. Find out whether there is demand before making serious investments.

When a landing page alone isn't enough

If you have dozens of services or hundreds of products, one page can't hold them. If customers should find you in search by different queries, each service needs its own page - that is a job for a corporate website. For online sales you need an online store with a cart and payment. You can work out which format suits you on the website development page.

Structure of a selling landing page

A good landing page is not a set of random blocks but a sequence of answers to the customer's questions:

  1. First screen. A clear headline (what you offer and to whom), a short explanation and a noticeable button. A person should grasp the point without scrolling.
  2. The problem. Describe the customer's difficulty in their own words.
  3. Solution and benefits. Write not about specifications but about the result for the customer.
  4. How it works. Simple steps from request to result.
  5. Trust. Real reviews, photos of work, certificates, an address and a map.
  6. Price or plans. If there is no exact price, explain what it depends on.
  7. Questions and answers. Short answers to the most common questions.
  8. Request form. As short as possible: name and phone are usually enough.

You can repeat the button or form several times so a person can leave a request right where they made the decision.

Steps to build a landing page

  1. Goal and audience. State in one sentence who the page is for and what action it should trigger.
  2. Copy. Texts are written before the design: headlines, benefits, answers to objections. Copy is the foundation of a landing page.
  3. Prototype. The order and placement of blocks are agreed on a simple diagram.
  4. Design. First of all for the phone screen, since visitors from ads most often arrive on a smartphone.
  5. Layout and integrations. Decide where requests go: to email, to a CRM or to a Telegram bot. The last option is especially handy when a manager needs to see the request immediately.
  6. Analytics. Counters for visits, clicks and requests are installed. Without them you cannot tell whether the ads pay off.
  7. Testing and launch. Checking on different phones and browsers, a test request, loading speed on slow mobile internet.

How to measure a landing page's effectiveness

The work doesn't end at launch - now it matters how the page brings in leads. Regularly watch these indicators:

  • Conversion. What share of visitors left a request. If you look at it for each ad source separately, you can see which channel is more profitable.
  • Cost per lead. Divide the ad spend by the number of leads and compare the result with the profit from one customer.
  • Lead quality. If there are many leads but no sales, the problem may be in the offer itself or in a wrongly chosen audience.
  • Behavior on the page. Which block visitors read to and where they leave.

To improve the result, change one element at a time: the headline, the button text or the image on the first screen. That way you'll know exactly which change worked.

Typical mistakes

  • The headline has only the company name and no offer.
  • Several different offers on one page - the customer doesn't know what to choose.
  • Too many fields in the form: address, email, comment, company name.
  • The page loads slowly because of heavy photos and video.
  • Requests are answered late. However good the landing page is, a late call loses the customer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a landing page need a separate domain?

Not necessarily. A landing page can live at a separate address inside your main site or on a subdomain. A separate domain makes sense for an independent brand or project.

Can a landing page rank in search engines?

It can, but a single page fits a limited set of queries. If you need organic traffic for many queries, a multi-page site is better.

Can a landing page later be turned into a full website?

Yes. The texts and design elements of a landing page often become the basis of a future corporate site, so it is important to build it on a technology that is easy to extend.
