What Is SEO: Website Promotion Basics for Business Owners
Many companies launch a website, but it can't be found in Google or Yandex and brings no customers. The reason is usually that the site isn't prepared for search engines. In simple words, we explain what SEO is, how search promotion of a website works, what you can do yourself, where a specialist is needed and how to evaluate the result.
What SEO is and how it works
SEO (search engine optimization) is work on a website so that it shows higher in search results. The goal is simple: when a person searches for your product or service, your site should appear in the results, and the visitor should choose it.
Search engines work in three stages:
- Crawling. Special programs - search robots - go through pages on the internet.
- Indexing. The pages found are analyzed and added to the search database.
- Ranking. When a user enters a query, the system orders pages by relevance to the query, usefulness and reliability.
SEO helps a site at every stage: so the robot easily finds the pages, understands them correctly and rates them as useful.
SEO and contextual ads: what's the difference
| Criterion | SEO (organic search) | Contextual ads |
|---|---|---|
| Payment for each click | No | Yes |
| Speed of result | Gradual | Right after launch |
| Duration of effect | The accumulated result stays | Ends along with the budget |
| How it looks in results | Among ordinary results | Marked "Ad" |
| What it requires | Time, content, technical work | A constant ad budget |
One doesn't exclude the other. Often a new site first gets customers from ads, while SEO gradually gains strength in the meantime and reduces dependence on the ad budget.
Main areas of SEO
Keywords and customer intent
Everything starts with understanding what words your customers use to search. In Uzbekistan this is especially important: people type in Russian, in Uzbek in Latin letters and in Cyrillic, sometimes with mistakes. For example, "air conditioner installation", "air conditioner installation price" or with a city name - "air conditioner installation in Tashkent". For each main group of queries, the site should have a suitable page.
Distinguish intent too: a person searching for "how to choose an air conditioner" is gathering information, while one who types "air conditioner installation price" is already ready to order.
Site structure
A separate page for each service or product category, a clear menu, logical page addresses (URLs) and internal links between them. A site where all services are listed on a single page can't compete for many queries.
Technical optimization
- fast loading, especially on a phone;
- full adaptation to mobile devices;
- secure HTTPS connection;
- a sitemap and correct instructions for robots;
- no duplicate pages or broken links;
- correct markup of language versions on a multilingual site.
The technical foundation is easy to lay during development and hard to fix on a finished site. That is why SEO requirements are worth agreeing on at the stage of building the site.
Page elements
Each page needs a unique title and description, one main H1 heading, logical H2 and H3 subheadings, and image captions (alt). These elements determine how you look in the results and whether a person clicks your site.
Content
Search engines aim to show higher the pages that answer the user's question fully and usefully. On a service page, state clearly what you do, for whom, in what order, what the price depends on and which districts you work in. Blog articles help customers find you while they are still looking for information. Text copied from someone else's site brings no benefit.
Local SEO
If your customers come from a specific city or district, visibility on maps is very important: a Google Business profile, listings on Yandex Maps and 2GIS, an exact address, working hours, photos and reviews. This is exactly the data shown for queries like "near me".
External signals
Links and mentions on other reliable sites matter: industry directories, partners, the media. Quality matters here, not quantity - bought spam links can do harm.
When to expect results and how to measure them
SEO is long-term work: search engines need time to recrawl and evaluate the changes. The higher the competition, the slower the result. So be wary of promises of specific dates and positions.
For monitoring, connect Google Search Console and Yandex Webmaster. There you can see:
- which queries the site appears for;
- how many times it appeared in results and how many times it was clicked;
- indexing errors and technical problems.
But the main indicator is the business result: leads and calls from search. For that, set up analytics and goals.
Dangerous promises and mistakes
- "We guarantee first place" - nobody controls search engine algorithms.
- Keyword stuffing: the text becomes unreadable, and search engines don't like that.
- Mass buying of links.
- Launching the site and never touching it again: outdated prices and data undermine trust.
- Working with only one language and losing part of the audience.
A short checklist for the business owner
- Is there a separate page for each main service?
- Are the city and contacts stated on the pages?
- Does the site open fast on a phone?
- Are Search Console and Webmaster connected?
- Are the map listings filled in, and do you respond to reviews?
- Is there content at least in Russian and Uzbek?
- Are leads from search counted separately?
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO done once?
Basic technical settings are done once, but updating content, new pages and monitoring results are an ongoing process.
When will a new site appear in search?
Indexing usually happens relatively quickly, while reaching high positions for competitive queries takes time. Everything depends on the niche, the competition and the quality of the site.
Is a blog required for SEO?
It isn't required, but it is useful. A blog answers customers' questions and helps the site appear for more queries.
