How to Choose a Domain: .uz or .com and a Good Name

A domain is the address of your website on the internet and often the first point of contact with a customer: it is printed on business cards, signs, in the Instagram profile and in ads. A poorly chosen name gets misspelled, forgotten, or sends people to a competitor by accident. Let's look at how to choose a domain name, how the .uz and .com zones differ, and how to register a domain so that it stays yours.

What a domain is and why it matters

A domain is a human-readable name used instead of the numeric IP address of a server, for example company.uz. It has two parts: the name itself and the domain zone (.uz, .com, .org and others).

A domain is more than the address of a site:

  • Brand. The name is repeated in ads, on packaging and business cards and becomes associated with the company.
  • Corporate email. An address like info@company.uz looks more solid than a mailbox on a free email service.
  • Trust. A short, clear domain gives the impression of a serious business.
  • Independence. A social network page can be blocked or the platform's rules can change, while a domain stays under your control.

.uz or .com: which zone to choose

Zone Who it suits Advantage What to consider
.uz Business on the Uzbekistan market Shows the company is local Check registration terms with the official registrar
.com International projects and export Widely known worldwide Short good names are often taken
.org, .net and others Organizations, special projects An available name is easier to find Customers may confuse the zone

A simple rule: if your customers are mostly in Uzbekistan, .uz is the natural choice. If you work on export or with foreign partners, .com is more logical. If possible, register the name in both zones and set up a redirect from the second domain to the main one - this protects the brand from being taken over.

Signs of a good domain name

  1. Short. The shorter it is, the easier to type and remember.
  2. Easy to write down by ear. A name dictated over the phone should be written without mistakes.
  3. Matches the brand. If the domain repeats the company name, the customer won't get confused.
  4. No digits or hyphens. By ear they raise questions: "a digit or a word?", "with a hyphen or together?".
  5. No ambiguous letter combinations. Avoid letters that sound the same but are written differently.
  6. Room for the future. Even if you sell only furniture today, don't tie the name too tightly to one product - your range may expand.

Transliteration of Uzbek names

If the company name is Uzbek, extra care is needed when choosing a domain. The characters in the letters o' and g' can't be used in a domain, so they are usually written as "o" and "g". Besides, people write the sounds x and h, sh and ch differently, and someone may transliterate the name from Cyrillic in their own way. The same goes for Russian names: everyone renders "ж", "ц", "щ" and "я" in Latin letters in their own manner.

A practical test: dictate the name over the phone to three or four acquaintances and ask them to write it down. If everyone wrote it differently, the name is problematic. In that case choose the most common spelling as the main one, and register the others and redirect them to the main site.

Choosing a domain step by step

  1. A list of options. The company name, an abbreviation, a combination of the name and the type of activity.
  2. Checking availability. On registrar websites, check whether each option is free.
  3. Names on social networks. If the same name is free on Instagram, Telegram and other networks, the brand looks consistent.
  4. Trademark. Check in official sources that the name isn't similar to another company's registered brand - this will save you from disputes.
  5. Registration. Register the domain in your own name or your company's.
  6. Tracking the expiry date. A domain is registered for a set period: set a renewal reminder or turn on auto-renewal.

Who to register the domain to

This is the most important question. Often an entrepreneur entrusts the domain to the developer along with the site, and the developer registers it in their own name. If the cooperation ends or contact with the contractor is lost, getting the domain back is hard, and sometimes impossible.

So:

  • you or your company must be listed as the owner of the domain;
  • keep the login details of the registrar account with you;
  • the email and phone in the account must be yours - renewal notifications go there.

The developer may get separate access for technical settings, but ownership stays with you. It is convenient to settle questions about the domain, hosting and email right in the process of building the site.

What to do after registering the domain

A domain on its own is not yet a website, only an address. To make everything work, settings are needed:

  • DNS records. They specify which server, that is, which hosting, the domain "points" to. They are entered in the registrar's account or a DNS service.
  • Corporate email. Separate records are added for the mail service, and employees send emails from an address on the company's domain.
  • Redirects. Additional domains and the variants with and without www lead to one main address, so search engines don't see one site at two addresses.
  • SSL certificate. Needed so the site opens over the secure https protocol.

If everything is set up correctly once, these parameters later need almost no attention. But keep a list of them and the access details in a safe place.

Typical mistakes

  • A name that is too long, made of several words.
  • The domain doesn't match the brand: the company is known under one name and the site under another.
  • Only one spelling is registered, and a similar name went to a competitor.
  • Nobody tracks the expiry date - the site and email suddenly stop working.
  • The domain is registered to an outsider.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the domain later?

You can, but it will affect search positions and customers' habits. When moving, a correct redirect from the old domain to the new one must be set up.

Can I connect several domains to one site?

Yes. Usually one main domain is chosen, and the others - in a different zone or with a different spelling - are redirected to it.

What happens if I don't renew the domain?

The site and email on this domain will stop working. If you don't renew in time, the domain will be released and someone else may take it. Check the exact terms with your registrar.
