Loyalty Program in an App: Bonuses and Cashback for Business

Regular customers bring a business steady revenue, yet in many shops and cafes nothing is known about them: paper cards get lost, and a plastic discount card does not show who bought what and when. A customer leaves for a competitor, and you do not even notice. Let us look at what kinds of loyalty programs a business can run, how to launch a bonus system in a mobile app, connect it to the POS and CRM, and still not eat into your own margin.

What a loyalty program gives a business

In essence, it is a reward system that motivates the customer to come back: bonus points, cashback, cumulative discounts, gifts, members-only offers. Its job is to turn a one-time purchase into a regular relationship.

What the business gets:

  • Repeat purchases. People hate losing accumulated bonuses, so the customer comes back.
  • Customer data. Who buys and how often, what they choose, who has not shown up for a long time.
  • Targeted promotions. Instead of one discount for everyone, offers for different groups of buyers.
  • Differentiation from competitors. At similar prices, the customer will choose the place where bonuses accumulate.

A bonus system works best where customers come regularly: coffee shops and cafes, grocery and clothing stores, pharmacies, beauty salons, car washes, learning centers.

Types of loyalty programs

Bonus points and cashback

From each purchase, part of the receipt amount is returned as points that can be used to pay for the next purchase. The clearest and most widespread mechanic.

Cumulative discounts and tiers

The more the customer buys, the higher their status and permanent discount. Tiers create a sense of progress and motivate people to reach the next step.

Stamp card

After a certain number of purchases the customer gets a product or service as a gift. A classic for coffee shops and car washes; in an app it cannot be forged, unlike a paper card.

Referral program

A customer invites a friend, and both get a bonus. This is often a cheaper way to attract a new buyer than advertising.

Paid club or subscription

The customer pays for permanent privileges. It suits businesses with regular services.

Mechanic How it works Who it suits What to watch
Bonuses and cashback Points from a purchase, payment with points Stores, cafes, pharmacies Value of a point and its validity period
Tiers and discounts The discount grows with purchase volume Clothing, cosmetics, wholesale Clear conditions for moving up
Stamp card A gift after a series of purchases Coffee shops, car washes Cost of the gift
Referral A bonus for an invited friend Services, learning centers Protection against fake accounts
Paid club Privileges for payment Salons, fitness Real benefit to the customer

At the start it is better to choose one mechanic and add a second based on results. If you turn everything on at once, customers will simply get confused.

Why it is more convenient to run a loyalty program in an app

A paper card is easy to lose or forge, a plastic one takes up space in the wallet, while a phone is always at hand. An app with bonuses lets you:

  • let the customer see their balance, level and purchase history at any moment;
  • quickly identify the buyer at the checkout by QR code or phone number;
  • send push notifications about promotions, a birthday gift or expiring points;
  • record every purchase automatically, with less manual accounting and abuse;
  • combine online ordering, delivery and bonuses in one place.

If your customers are not yet ready to install a separate app, at the first stage the balance can be shown through a Telegram bot. But a full system with personal offers, a catalog and orders is best realized in your own app; for more on how we build one, see the mobile app development page.

Features of a bonus app

For the customer

  • registration by phone number;
  • a personal QR code;
  • balance, current level and how much is left until the next one;
  • history of purchases and accruals;
  • personal offers and promotions;
  • a list of branches on the map;
  • an interface in Uzbek and Russian.

For the business: admin panel

  • changing the rules without a programmer: accrual rate, levels, validity periods;
  • creating promotions and personal offers;
  • customer segments: new, active, "dormant";
  • reports: active members, points accrued and redeemed;
  • a log of employee actions: who accrued or redeemed bonuses and when.

Integration with the POS and CRM

The app itself does not know how much the customer spent: it receives purchase data from the POS. If the cashier enters points by hand every time, errors and abuse are almost inevitable. So at the start of the project it is worth finding out:

  1. Which POS program you use and whether it can be connected to an external system.
  2. Whether points are accrued automatically when the receipt is closed or after scanning the QR code.
  3. If there are several branches, whether a single balance is visible in each of them.
  4. Where the customer record is stored: in a separate database or in your CRM.

If the POS is outdated and cannot exchange data, it makes sense to build the bonus system together with a new inventory and POS program. And to see the customer's history alongside sales and marketing data, the app is connected to a CRM system.

Checklist of program rules

  • A tangible benefit. The customer must feel that the bonuses are worth something, otherwise the program will be ignored.
  • Margin calculation. Bonuses are paid out of your profit: calculate them with your accountant for each product group, and low-margin items can be excluded.
  • Validity period of points. Expiring points motivate people to return sooner, but you must warn about expiry in advance.
  • Returns. When a product is returned, the points accrued for it must be deducted.
  • Overlap with promotions. Decide in advance whether bonuses are accrued on discounted items.
  • Open rules. Short and clear: in the app, on the website and at the checkout.
  • Personal data. A phone number and purchase history count as personal data; check official sources for current requirements on storing and processing them.

How to launch a bonus system

  1. Define the goal and metrics: repeat purchases, number of active members, average check.
  2. Choose one main mechanic.
  3. Check the possibility of integration with the POS and CRM.
  4. Launch the first version: registration, QR code, balance, admin panel.
  5. Train cashiers and salespeople, because they are the ones who offer the program to every buyer.
  6. Test in one branch, then roll out to the others.
  7. Analyze the results regularly and adjust the rules.

Typical mistakes

  • Complicated rules. If a customer cannot explain in one sentence how to get a bonus, the program does not work.
  • Silence at the checkout. Even a convenient app will not be installed by anyone if the salesperson does not mention it.
  • Data is collected but not used. Without segments and personal offers, the program turns into an ordinary discount.
  • Spamming with notifications. Too frequent mailings lead to the app being deleted.
  • Manual accounting. A system without integration becomes a source of errors and distrust.

FAQ

Do we need a separate app for a bonus program?

Not necessarily: a simple mechanic can run through a Telegram bot or by phone number at the checkout. But for personal offers, push notifications and online orders, an app is noticeably more convenient.

What is more profitable: bonuses or discounts?

A discount lowers the price immediately, while a bonus brings the customer back for the next purchase. Where repeat visits matter, the bonus mechanic is often more logical, but the choice depends on your markup and your buyers' habits.

Will the bonus system work with our POS?

That depends on whether the POS program can exchange data with external systems. We check this at the start of the project and offer options: integration or upgrading the POS.
